Issues:

  • Advantages of being a part of EEA.
  • Advantages of being a part of the EU.
  • Should Norway and Switzerland join the EU.
Introduction
Norway and Switzerland are the two richest countries in Europe, apart from the minuscule Luxembourg. They have the highest per-capita income of all European countries with the exception of Luxembourg. However, they are not part of the regional trade bloc, the 25-member European Union (EU).

However, both the countries are members of European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and are dependent on trade with the EU to a great extent. They have tried to prosper outside the EU. In fact, Norway has grown twice as fast as Britain over the past 30 years.

The governments of Switzerland and Norway did not win the referendums to join EU that they held in their countries.

Questions
1. What are the advantages for Norway and Switzerland of being part of the EU? Is it beneficial for them to join the EU? Discuss it in brief.

2. Discuss the reasons that might have made people in both the countries reject referendums which proposed their joining the European Union.
